Another myth buster. This one’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
Myth: White potatoes are unhealthy and lead to weight gain
Truth: Many people wanting to lose weight or improve health often give up potatoes. Admittedly eating too many potatoes will lead to weight gain, as with any food (possibly with the exception of foods such as celery – who would eat enough to put on weight anyway?)
However white potatoes are highly nutritious. They are a great source of nutrients such as potassium, vitamin c and fibre. Potatoes are also filling, probably more so than rice and pasta, so can help you feel fuller after meals.
Of course, the caveat for eating potatoes would be to enjoy them boiled or baked. It’s likely what you add to the potatoes in the form of butter, cream, sour cream and oil that are the issue with weight gain. So the warning is be careful with what you add to your spuds.
